This week I would like to share some thoughts from Charles Caudill, President of World Christian Broadcasting Corporation, from his latest newsletter.
My family and I watched a stirring movie called The Book of Eli. It is a post-apocalyptic tale about a lone man who fights his way across America in order to protect a sacred book that holds the secrets to saving mankind. There are many enemies who try to take it away from him. My favorite part of the movie comes when the hero, Eli, does a good thing for someone and she asks why. Eli replies, "I got so caught up in keeping it (The King James version of the Bible) safe, I forgot to live by what I learned from it."
Think about that. Is there a difference between our mission and what we do? Do we ever let our traditions get in the way of our mission? When things get tough, when things in our lives do not go exactly the way we want, we sometimes confuse a Christian lifestyle with the Christian life. Some throw up their hands and head for the hills. Others, retreat into a "Jesus and me" religion, letting the world go its merry way.
But what about the concept of being salt and light, or the Great Commission, and the two Greatest Commandments? God things that put us right in the middle of what is happening around the world? The world has sometimes been friendly to the church, but the world has always in every generation been hostile to Jesus Christ. His call to self-denial is never in fashion. And neither is being salt and light. Yet Jesus has said, "You are salt and light to the world."
As we are transformed into His likeness, we are an offensive odor to those who are perishing, but a sweet aroma to those who are being saved. Showing Jesus Christ to others is our commission, and what that does to others is up to God.
Do we ever get so caught up in keeping the Word of God safe that we forget to live by it and share it?
