This week I share some thoughts adapted from an article of the same title by Lynell LaMountain.
What do you believe defines you as a person?
Is it your decisions? Your thoughts? Your actions? Your history? What?
Truth is, it is probably a combination of all those things.
But one of the defining characteristics of what it means to be human is this: CHANGE.
Have you ever heard someone say, "That is just the kind of person I am. Take it, or leave it!"
Well that is only true if that is the kind of person they choose to remain.
Where did we get this idea that we are "set in our ways?" Why do we have to be set in our ways? Why do we have to be "just that way," or say, "Its just my nature?"
Who says it has to be that way?
When I was in high school, I broke my left foot in four places. What if my parents had said, "He has a broken foot. That is who he is. Just another kid with a broken foot. There is nothing we can do about it. Good luck with it?"
Instead, they took me to the doctor and my foot was fixed.
Why is it that we take time, energy and money to fix our bodies but not our hearts?
"Oh that is just the kind of person I am." Baloney!
That is not who you are! As a child of GOD, you can be whatever kind of person you choose to be. The desires of your heart are only limited by your imagination.
Read Isaiah 64:8. It says, "Yet, O Lord, you are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter. We are all the work of your hand."
What defines you? That is a question only you can answer.
For me, what defines me is my cooperation with GOD in letting Him mold me into my truest self ... the Image of Jesus Christ.
ENCOUNTER THE WORD
Read Jeremiah 18:3-4. It says, "So I went down to the potter's house, and I saw him working at the wheel. But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands. So the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as it seemed best to him."
ENCOUNTER QUESTIONS
- What have you allowed to define you?
- In what aspects of your life would you like to CHANGE?
- What might it take for GOD to shape you into what He wants you to be?
